30. 3596 Mythologizing the Mahatma: The Relationship Between Mythic Form and Political Content in Raja Rao's "Kanthapura".

This paper will argue that the tension between these two often contradictory levels of writing - the mythic/poetic and the political/prosaic - is the defining characteristic of the novel. As will be seen, this tension is both a strength and a weakness to the narrative; on the one hand enhancing its sheer readability as a story, and on the other hand blurring readers' understanding of the realities of the Indian Independence struggle. 5 pgs. bibliography lists 1 source.

The primary areas of focus will be on the country's economic plans under Nehruvian socialism, its industrial/agricultural strategy, the importance of foreign aid, and more briefly, what has happened since the post-1991 economic reforms. 13.5 pgs. 19 f/c. 7b.

32. 2982 Economic Growth in India: The Role of Human Capital and Education.

This paper will take a look at the effects India's human capital has on its longer-term prospects for economic development. By looking at the importance of education and human capital within the broader process of economic development itself, it can be concluded that India's prospects are almost directly linked with its stock of human power. There is clear evidence suggesting that the country's poorest are in fact getting poorer and that the inequalities and cleavages in the country are even closer to rupturing than in the past. One of the only ways to mend this wound is through education and increasing the quality of the country's human capital. 17.5 pgs. 26 f/c. 12b.

35. 3058 Economics: An Explanation Of India's Economic Performance.

The purpose of this study will be to provide an alternative framework of economic, political and social change that has taken place within India during the postwar years in an effort to explain this particular country's economic performance. This comprehensive study is aimed at the major economic, political, cultural and social changes and crises that have taken place within India during the period in question and it will attempt to assess the extent to which these factors have shaped the country's economic performance. Included in this analysis will be an assessment of economic development and social change, the economic and political aspects of agricultural change, as well as political change, political structure and the functioning of government. Attention will also be directed towards the caste conflict and language differences as well as the extent to which they have had an impact on the level of economic development that India has been able to achieve and the nature of this development. The main hypothesis that will be tested in this study will be the following: while India has achieved relatively significant economic advances during recent years, especially in light of the country's status as a Third World nation, these advances have been limited. To be more specific, these advances have been limited by the difficult and complex environment that characterizes the nation and that reflects economic, political, cultural and social factors. 12 pgs. bibliography lists 5 sources.
